Authorities are conducting an investigation into the recent crash of a Bering Air plane that claimed the lives of all 10 individuals on board.
Crews are actively engaged in the challenging recovery efforts following the tragic crash of a Bering Air plane in Alaska, which claimed the lives of all ten individuals onboard. Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), stated that the investigation is currently in its early stages and that it is premature to determine the cause of the crash.
The Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft was en route from Unalakleet to Nome when it lost radar contact approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome, a city with a population of approximately 3,500 located on Alaska's west coast. Among the deceased are two employees of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, Rhone Baumgartner and Kameron Hartvigson, who were on a mission to conduct maintenance work at a local water plant.
During a news conference held in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, Ms. Homendy expressed condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and reiterated that the primary goal of the recovery efforts is to retrieve the victims' bodies. She also noted that investigators from the NTSB are on-site, supplemented by specialists from Washington, D.C.
However, recovery operations are facing difficulties due to deteriorating weather conditions. The wreckage of the plane has landed on an ice floe that is drifting at a rate of five miles per day, complicating efforts to reach and recover it.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed they were notified of an “overdue” aircraft late Thursday afternoon, adding that the plane had previously communicated its intention to enter a holding pattern while awaiting runway clearance. Shortly thereafter, the plane experienced a dramatic loss of altitude and speed before communication ceased, which aligns with video footage showing poor visibility in the area at the time.
In the aftermath of the incident, local and state officials, including Senator Lisa Murkowski and Governor Mike Dunleavy, have expressed their condolences and support for the impacted families, emphasizing the close-knit nature of communities in Alaska.
