Tragic Cable Car Accident in Italy Claims Lives of Tourists
A cable car crash near Naples has resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two British tourists and an Israeli citizen, prompting investigations into the incident.
A tragic cable car accident occurred south of Naples, Italy, on Thursday, claiming the lives of four individuals, including two British tourists and an Israeli citizen. The Italian driver of the cable car was also among the deceased. The accident happened approximately 20 seconds before the cable car was set to arrive at the scenic plateau on Monte Faito, a popular viewpoint known for its breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
The victims have been identified by Italian officials as Elaine Margaret Winn and Graeme Derek Winn from Britain, and Janan Suleiman, an Arab woman holding Israeli citizenship. Her brother, Thabet Suleiman, who was the only survivor, is currently in critical condition in a hospital in Naples.
Mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, Luigi Vicinanza, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as “tragic.” He noted that the family of the Suleiman siblings were expected to arrive in Italy on Friday to be with their loved one. The mayor further explained that the cable fell after a traction cable snapped, which trapped the cabin near the peak and another cable car at the Castellammare station, complicating rescue efforts.
Local firefighters successfully rescued the nine individuals who were stranded in the lower cable car using harnesses. As the situation unfolds, Italian prosecutors have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to this devastating crash.
