Vietnamese Beauty Queen Arrested Amid Fraud Investigation Linked to Fake Fiber Gummies
A Miss Grand International pageant winner is facing charges of consumer fraud while promoting purported fiber-rich supplements.
Vietnam's Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, who won the Miss Grand International pageant in 2021, has recently been arrested by authorities on grounds of consumer fraud linked to the promotion of Kera Supergreens Gummies. The beauty queen heavily advertised these gummies on her social media platforms, claiming they contained a substantial amount of fiber equivalent to a plate of vegetables. However, subsequent product testing revealed that each gummy contained only 16mg of fiber, starkly contrasting with the claimed 200mg.
Investigations initiated as a result of public backlash uncovered that the gummies were produced by a joint venture involving Nguyen and fellow influencers Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc. The product packaging failed to disclose important details regarding fiber content and included high levels of sorbitol, commonly found in laxatives, raising further concerns.
Following the testing, the trio was fined in March for misleading the public, with Pham and Hang Du Muc arrested in the subsequent month alongside company officials. They faced serious charges for producing counterfeit goods and defrauding customers. On a recent Monday, authorities announced Nguyen's arrest under similar allegations of customer deception.
The gummy scandal saw over 100,000 boxes sold before sales were halted, adversely impacting Nguyen's reputation, who had garnered multiple accolades post her beauty pageant win, including recognition from the Vietnamese government. This incident poses critical questions regarding the responsibilities of influencers in promoting products and ensuring consumer safety.
