A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit central Myanmar near the city of Mandalay on Friday, causing substantial destruction and loss of life in a country already grappling with civil conflict. The earthquake has led to fears that fatalities could reach into the thousands, as initial reports from the military government indicate at least 144 confirmed deaths in three cities, excluding Mandalay where the effects were severe. The U.S. Geological Survey's modeling suggests a potential death toll of over 1,000, with the disturbance felt across Southeast Asia including neighboring Thailand where it even caused a construction site collapse.

The tremor occurred at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time and is one of the largest to impact the region in the last century, with Mandalay located just 10 miles from the epicenter. An aftershock measuring 6.7 was recorded shortly afterward, adding to concerns and prompting emergency declarations in nearby regions. Authorities in Thailand declared Bangkok an “area of emergency” in the aftermath, while reports indicated injuries in southern China as well.

The condition of infrastructure is alarming in a region known for its aged and vulnerable buildings. Historical sites in Mandalay, including former religious monuments, have been reported damaged or destroyed.
