Zimbabwe's Streets Silent as Protest Call Fizzles Out

With citizens opting for safety over defiance, Zimbabwe experiences an unusual national shutdown amid political unrest.

A protest aimed at compelling President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign saw minimal participation, overshadowed by a heavy police presence and a city-wide shutdown.

In a dramatic turn of events in Zimbabwe, what was anticipated to be a national protest against President Emmerson Mnangagwa has resulted in a widespread shutdown as citizens opted for caution rather than confrontation. The protest was organized by a faction of disgruntled war veterans who have leveled accusations of corruption against Mnangagwa and expressed fears that he is intent on prolonging his hold on power.

The planned march, which aimed to rally public support to force the resignation of the president, saw a significantly low turnout. Many citizens stayed away, aware of the intense security presence, with police deploying tear gas and crowd control methods to disperse the few who did gather. Protest leader Blessed Geza expressed disappointment over the turnout, urging fellow Zimbabweans on social media to be brave and join the cause.

Mnangagwa, who ascended to the presidency in 2017 following a coup, is currently in his second and final term, which is set to conclude in 2028. Despite reassurances from the president that he plans to vacate office at the end of his term, suspicions linger, particularly concerning rumors of an extension to 2030. The tense atmosphere has left businesses shuttered and public schools closed, with transportation services significantly restricted as residents prioritized safety.

While officials from the ruling Zanu-PF party have downplayed the significance of the empty streets, political analysts argue that the response demonstrated a profound political statement against the current leadership. The calls from the clergy for peaceful resolution reflect the deep concerns about potential instability in a nation already wrestling with economic challenges.

Citizens like the protester on crutches, who shared her struggles as a grandmother supporting her family, signified the daily hardships that many face. The collective sentiment across the country speaks volumes about the interplay between governance, public expectation, and economic reality, leaving Zimbabweans at a crossroads as they contemplate their future amidst uncertainty.
