Basel Bassel Ebbadi, a 22-year-old Lebanese national, was caught attempting to enter the United States illegally on March 9, 2024, by Border Patrol agents in El Paso, Texas. In a startling admission, Ebbadi confessed to being trained by the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, specifically in bomb-making techniques intended for jihadist operations.

Despite the serious nature of his claims, Ebbadi was released into the U.S. instead of being detained by authorities. His intentions seemed dire as he later revealed plans to travel to New York for the purpose of constructing a bomb. He stated that his training involved targeting “people that were not Muslim,” although he asserted a desire to renounce his association with Hezbollah. Nevertheless, Ebbadi acknowledged the difficulty in fully extricating oneself from such groups, remarking that “once you’re in, you can never get out.”
