While some see him as a potential threat to democratic processes, others view him as a savvy business leader capable of reforming government efficiency.

In Erie, Pennsylvania, a group of veterans in their 80s reflects on decades of friendship, yet finds their conversations increasingly dominated by one subject: Elon Musk's influence in President Donald Trump's administration. Amid their discussions, Bob, one of the veterans who supported Trump, shares his fear that Musk might be positioning himself for a greater political role, stating, "I'm afraid of him. I think he's trying to be president."

The context of their concerns lies in Erie County's pivotal role in the 2024 presidential election where Trump garnered 50.1% of the votes. Trump's campaign promised extensive slashing of federal spending, which resonated with many Republican voters. However, many felt blindsided by Musk’s significant position as the head of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), where he is tasked with reducing government size and monitoring federal spending.
