Three Men Arrested for Attempted Smuggling of Hermit Crabs in Japan
Three Chinese nationals detained for attempting to smuggle protected species from Amami Island.
Three men, aged 24, 26, and 27, were arrested in Japan’s Amami Island after hotel staff reported unusual noises coming from their luggage, which led to the discovery of approximately 95kg of hermit crabs. The suspects, identified as Chinese nationals in local media, raised concerns about their intentions with the crabs, which are deemed a protected part of Amami's biodiversity. Police are investigating whether the men intended to sell, keep as pets, or consume the crustaceans. The hermit crabs, sometimes valued up to ¥20,000 (£103), are commonly found along the beaches of the tourist island, amplifying the importance of conservation efforts in the area. The investigation continues as authorities seek to clarify the situation surrounding the men and their unusual cargo.
