The incident occurred as Hamilton adjusts to his role in the Ferrari team ahead of the upcoming F1 season.
Lewis Hamilton has experienced a crash while testing with Ferrari during the team's pre-season preparations in Spain. The celebrated seven-time champion emerged uninjured following the incident where he lost control of the 2023 Ferrari at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Wednesday. The crash occurred on Hamilton's second day with the team, which has been concentrating on integrating him into their operations ahead of the Australian Grand Prix scheduled for 14-16 March.
Ferrari has opted not to provide any commentary on the crash, which they deem as typical for Hamilton as he acclimatizes to the characteristics of a new car after a long tenure with Mercedes, particularly under F1's stringent testing restrictions. The running program is limited this year, with Hamilton only allowed to drive a maximum of 1,000 km (621 miles) of so-called TPC, or testing of previous cars.
Prior to his work in Barcelona, Hamilton completed a mere 30 laps at Ferrari's Fiorano test track on January 22, before being joined by team-mate Charles Leclerc for Barcelona's tests, which extend over three days. The team's focus is on promoting Hamilton's understanding of Ferrari's systems, procedures, and team dynamics while collaborating with race engineer Riccardo Adami and the engineering crew.
Ferrari's 2025 car is set to be unveiled at Fiorano on February 19, immediately following F1's season launch event in London. The team plans to provide Hamilton with additional testing opportunities prior to this launch during a Pirelli tire test. Furthermore, they are scheduled to participate in additional testing sessions on February 4-5, also in Barcelona, which will utilize a modified 2025 car to align with the new regulations that will come into effect in 2026. Meanwhile, McLaren is actively engaged in a similar tire test at Paul Ricard in France, focusing on the development of Pirelli's future products.
