Ukrainian Operatives Expand Offensive with Bold Assassinations in Russia

Ukrainian intelligence services reportedly execute high-profile targets in Russia, signaling a shift in operational capabilities.

Ukrainian security's recent strikes against Russian officials have raised urgent concerns about the Kremlin's internal security and highlight the extending reach of Ukraine’s clandestine operations.

Ukrainian hitmen and saboteurs have been increasingly bold in their operations, with reports detailing significant attacks targeting Russian officials within Moscow. A notable incident involved the assassination of Lt Gen Igor Kirillov, a key military figure, using an explosive device concealed in an electric scooter and detonated remotely. This event marks a critical moment, as Kirillov stands as one of the highest-ranking military personnel killed outside active combat zones since the beginning of the ongoing conflict.

The assassination of Kirillov has sent shockwaves through Russia's military hierarchy and political landscape, as his role was pivotal in overseeing Russia’s military strategies, particularly in chemical, biological, and radiation defense. Ukrainian sources, specifically from the SBU security service, have confirmed their involvement in the operation, prompting broader discussions about Russia's internal security measures and the capability of Ukrainian intelligence to operate deep in enemy territory.

The choice of a common electric scooter as the medium for the attack allowed the perpetrators to blend in, as these scooters are frequently left unattended around the city streets. The precise timing of the explosion—executed as Gen Kirillov was exiting his residence with an aide—suggests careful planning and possibly physical surveillance or camera monitoring by the attackers.

This assassination is believed to be part of a larger pattern of Ukrainian operations targeting Russian military and political figures. Noteworthy prior attacks include the assassination of war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky in April 2023, who was killed when a bomb detonated during a public event. Such incidents reflect a tactical use of deception to infiltrate identifiable targets, as shown by the case of Darya Trepova, who claimed ignorance of explosives hidden within a sculpture during the attack on Tatarsky.

Moreover, the recent shooting of prominent missile scientist Mikhail Shatsky just days before Kirillov’s assassination exemplifies the speed and coordination of these operations. Shatsky played a crucial role in modernizing war weaponry that has inflicted significant losses on Ukraine, effectively pinpointing dangers posed by Ukrainian intelligence.

Even beyond military personnel, civilians consider potential targets for Ukrainian operations, as observed in the car bomb assassination of Darya Dugina in 2022, connected to her father’s ideologically driven support for the war in Ukraine.

While these escalating attacks demonstrate the diverse strategies employed by Ukrainian security services, there is speculation regarding the roots of such violence. Some experts suggest the possibility of internal discord within the Russian military, or even the Kremlin orchestrating these events to eliminate potential witnesses to war crimes. As Kyiv military analyst Yuriy Karin stated, if the SBU was indeed behind Kirillov’s assassination, the message is clear: "Even within Moscow's ring road, Russian generals cannot feel safe."
