Uncovering the Truth: Hidden Deaths in India's Kumbh Mela Disaster

A BBC investigation reveals discrepancies in the reported death toll and compensation payments related to the deadly crowd crush at the Kumbh Mela festival in India.

Amidst claims of a low official death toll, a BBC investigation has uncovered additional fatalities and compensation payments, suggesting Indian officials underreported the consequences of the Kumbh Mela crowd crush. Families have been given cash compensation, but some have faced pressure to misrepresent causes of death, leading to widespread distress and calls for accountability.

A recent investigation by BBC Hindi has raised alarming questions about the official narrative surrounding the deadly crowd crush during the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest religious gathering, held on January 29, 2023, in Prayagraj, India. While the Uttar Pradesh government officially reported 37 deaths, the BBC investigation has unveiled at least 26 additional cases where families received compensation, alongside 18 deaths that remain unacknowledged, indicating a much darker reality.

On March 25, a covert team of police officers from Uttar Pradesh visited families in Gopalganj, Bihar, distributing cash compensation of 500,000 rupees (approximately $5,758) for victims like 62-year-old Tara Devi, who lost her life in the crush. The son of Tara Devi, Dhananjay Gond, confirmed that this amount was just the first installment of a promised total of 2.5 million rupees, a figure the government claims to have paid to the families of 35 reported victims. Instead of transparency, however, the investigation revealed that many families were pressured to sign documents attributing deaths to health complications rather than the crush itself, which is vital for governmental compensation protocols.

Eyewitness accounts from various families provided compelling evidence of renewed fears regarding official miscommunication. The BBC spoke to over 100 families across 11 states who lost loved ones, confirming 82 deaths with physical evidence, while also stating that the state does not compensate for natural deaths incurred during the festival. Of the 18 fatalities recorded without compensation, cases varied significantly—some families, armed only with personal accounts and photographs from the event, battled against bureaucratic indifference.

The investigation also illustrated the presence of multiple crush incidents that erupted at various locations around Prayagraj on January 29. Contrary to government claims that only one incident occurred at Sangam Nose, citizens reported emergency situations at sites like Airavat Marg and Mukti Marg. Rana Devi, who lost her husband in one such incident, spoke of waiting hours with her deceased spouse's body in a crowd, unable to summon help amid chaotic scenes—an image reflective of systemic failures in safety and emergency response measures.

Deep distrust in the claims made by government officials has emerged, as families contest inconsistencies in the reported occurrences and compensations. Videos from the scene captured desperate survivors and grieving families, leading to public outrage over the narrative and the handling of casualties.

As the investigation continues, tragic stories of families left without acknowledgment illustrate a pressing need for complete accountability. The UP government has faced criticism for its lack of transparency and oversight, prompting calls for an investigation that goes beyond compensation amounts, emphasizing the need for genuine recognition of loss and systemic reform in handling crowd safety at major religious events.

In the aftermath, the emotional toll on those affected is palpable. As families mourn and demand justice, the question remains whether the state will acknowledge its failures and address the root causes of such a preventable tragedy in the future.
