Devastating Floods and Landslides Claim Lives in South Korea

Over 17 fatalities reported as torrential rains cause severe flooding and landslides across southern and central regions of South Korea.

Following days of heavy rain, South Korea faces a tragic crisis as floods and landslides lead to the deaths of at least 17 individuals, with ongoing rescue operations revealing extensive damage and further missing persons.

In a catastrophic series of events, South Korea is grappling with the aftermath of severe floods and landslides that have claimed at least 17 lives, according to reports from the country's disaster management office. As rescue operations continue, concerns are escalating as 11 individuals remain unaccounted for in the wake of torrential rain that has persistently battered the region.

Footage from the disaster-hit resort town of Gapyeong reveals harrowing images of residents traversing through thick mud, desperately navigating to evacuation shelters over damaged bridges. In the central Chungcheong region, an entire village was reportedly buried under earth and debris due to a landslide, as illustrated by shocking video footage captured over the weekend.

The hardest hit area appears to be Sancheong, where six fatalities have been confirmed and seven more individuals are still reported missing. As floodwaters rage, thousands of roads and buildings have suffered extensive damage, and agricultural lands along with livestock have also faced devastating losses.

Since the downpour commenced last Wednesday, nearly 10,000 individuals have been forced to evacuate their residences, while more than 41,000 households have temporarily lost electricity, as reported by local media outlets. While the intensity of rainfall in the southern and central regions has diminished, forecasts indicate that the northern areas, including the capital Seoul, are poised for additional heavy rain in the coming hours.

In response to the crisis, President Lee Jae-myung has declared the severely affected areas as special disaster zones. A comprehensive multi-agency recovery effort is underway, with Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung urging local authorities to mobilize all resources for an effective response.

Among the tragic incidents reported, a landslide in Gapyeong County resulted in the death of two residents as several properties succumbed to the onslaught of mud. Though it is anticipated that rainfall may taper off by late Sunday, an impending heatwave follows closely behind, posing additional challenges in recovery efforts. As the search for missing persons continues, the profound impact of this natural disaster looms large over the region's residents.
