In the wake of Pope Francis's passing, images of his tomb have been unveiled, capturing the homage paid by thousands of mourners at Santa Maria Maggiore basilica, revered by the late pope.

 

Images of Pope Francis's tomb at the historic Santa Maria Maggiore church in Rome were made public following a private burial service that took place after a massive public funeral. The stone tomb, adorned merely with a single white rose, is marked by the name Francis embraced during his papacy and is situated below a softly lit crucifix. The late pontiff, who passed away at the age of 88, was laid to rest at this significant basilica—a choice deeply personal to him, as he often visited it during his time as cardinal and pope.

Since opening to the public for mourning on Sunday morning, the church has seen an influx of thousands of visitors paying their respects. Among those were emotional Italian mourners like Rosario Correale, who articulated the profound impact the pope had on their lives. Similarly, Polish pilgrim Maria Brzezinska expressed that the simplicity of the tomb reflected the essence of Pope Francis. This basilica, originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the 4th Century, holds special significance as Francis expressed his desire to rest there, drawing inspiration from the Virgin's humility.

While traditionally, popes are interred within the Vatican, this location resonates with Francis’s deep devotion to Mary. Many have marveled at the late pope's choice, emphasizing the humbling nature of his final resting place.
