Galatasaray Initiates Legal Action Against Mourinho Over Alleged Racism

Following a tense match, Galatasaray accuses Fenerbahce's Jose Mourinho of making racist comments and threatens legal action.

In light of a controversial post-match press conference, Galatasaray has announced plans to pursue criminal charges against Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho, alleging that he made derogatory racist remarks.

Galatasaray expressed their intention to initiate criminal proceedings against Mourinho post the teams' 0-0 draw, claiming that his comments included "racist statements." Although Galatasaray did not specify which statements he made, Mourinho's remark about the opposing bench's reaction to a player’s fall, likening it to monkeys, sparked outrage. After the derby, he criticized Turkish referees, indicating it would be "disastrous" to use one, as the match had a Slovenian referee due to requests from both clubs.

In response, Galatasaray stated they would file formal complaints with both Uefa and Fifa, highlighting that Mourinho’s repeated derogatory comments since beginning his tenure in Turkey reflect a significant moral failure. "His discourse has escalated into unequivocally inhumane rhetoric," they said, noting their expectations from Fenerbahce regarding the situation.

Mourinho, who has managed several high-profile clubs, was appointed as Fenerbahce's manager in 2024, and has previously been fined for his outbursts against Turkish refereeing. Ahead of the match, he called for foreign match officials to maintain the credibility of the sport in Turkey, which he had previously described as "toxic."

The ongoing dispute raises questions about racial discourse in sports and the implications of managerial conduct in high-stakes environments, as officials from both football governing bodies and Mourinho's management await further developments in this serious matter.
