SOS in Sokoto: Search Intensifies for Missing Passengers After Boat Capsizes
More than 40 people are unaccounted for after a tragic boat incident in Nigeria's Sokoto state, highlighting the ongoing safety concerns surrounding water travel in the region.
Rescue workers in Nigeria’s Sokoto state are in the midst of a search operation for over 40 individuals who have gone missing after a boat capsized while carrying more than 50 passengers. The National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) announced that the boat was on its way to a local market when it met with this unfortunate event in the River Goronyo on Sunday. So far, four survivors have been located. Nema is bolstering its efforts alongside local authorities to find those who remain unaccounted for.
Boat accidents are not uncommon in Nigeria, often attributed to factors such as overcrowding, inadequately maintained vessels, and the poor enforcement of existing safety regulations. The situation is exasperated in rural areas, where essential safety gear, including life jackets, is frequently unavailable. The scale of boat-related tragedies has prompted concerns; a devastating incident in December 2024 resulted in the recovery of 54 bodies from the River Niger after a vessel carrying over 200 people capsized. This incident marked the third reported boat disaster within a mere two-month span.
In another heart-wrenching occurrence a month prior, nearly 200 were lost when a wooden canoe, overloaded with around 300 passengers, sank in the Niger. A separate tragedy two years ago claimed the lives of over 100 individuals traveling from Kwara state to Niger state after attending a wedding celebration, also exacerbated by poor safety compliance.
As the search for the missing continues, the pressing issue of maritime safety remains critical in Nigeria, with both authorities and communities urged to adopt stricter measures to prevent further disasters.
