Mathematics Meets Art: Celebrating Pi Day with "Mathemalchemy"
Ingrid Daubechies' innovative installation merges math and creativity, showcasing the beauty of numbers through a traveling multimedia exhibit.
Ingrid Daubechies, a mathematician from Duke University renowned for her contributions to both mathematics and culinary creativity, is gearing up to celebrate Pi Day, the annual recognition of the mathematical constant pi, observed on March 14. Interestingly, this day aligns with the International Day of Mathematics 2025, which revolves around the theme of mathematics, art, and creativity.
As part of this year’s festivities, Dr. Daubechies plans to bake pi-shaped cookies, a gastronomic homage to her field. In her unique approach, she favors a savory rendition of the pi cookie, made with Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and fresh herbs. In the summer of 2023, she crafted an innovative pi-shaped cookie cutter designed to tile the dough without generating waste, representing her commitment to sustainable practices in her edible art.
This year, Dr. Daubechies will be at the University of Quebec in Montreal, where she will host immersive tours of "Mathemalchemy," a multimedia installation that she has passionately developed over the past five years. The installation, described as a spacious 360-degree diorama measuring 20 feet in length and 9.5 feet in height, delves into the convergence of mathematics and art.
Collaboration with fiber sculptor Dominique Ehrmann and a diverse group of 24 artistic mathematicians has enriched "Mathemalchemy," which debuted in 2022 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. Following its initial unveiling, the installation has toured various venues, further promoting the dialogue between the realms of art and mathematics.
Dr. Daubechies' connection with the public goes beyond the exhibit; she will also lead a public lecture titled “Mathematics to the Rescue of Art Curators,” demonstrating the practical applications of mathematical principles in the art world. As "Mathemalchemy" continues its journey, it aims to inspire and engage an audience, bridging the gap between the analytical world of mathematics and the expressive domain of art.
