200 Inmates Escape Karachi Jail Amid Earthquake Chaos
Following an earthquake in Karachi, over 200 inmates broke out of Malir Jail, prompting a substantial police response to recapture escapees.
More than 200 inmates fled from the Malir Jail in Karachi, Pakistan, after the trembling from an earthquake caused widespread panic and chaos early Tuesday morning. The tremors affected the structural integrity of the prison, leading to thousands of inmates breaking down doors, locks, and windows, ultimately storming the main gates to escape. Authorities reported that as of now, approximately 80 of the escapees have been apprehended, leaving over 130 inmates still at large. Tragically, one inmate lost their life during the subsequent police operation, and two prison officers sustained injuries.
The incident began around midnight, with inmates escalating into a frenzy of anxiety as they feared the prison would collapse under tremors. In the turmoil, police responded with warning shots, attempting to restore order; however, the chaos allowed 216 inmates to take advantage of the situation and make their way to freedom. Police efforts now include visiting local neighborhoods to track down escapees.
Malir Jail, located in the Malir district, is reportedly operating well beyond its capacity, housing about 5,000 inmates despite being designed for just 2,200. In response to the jailbreak, Ali Hassan Zardari, the minister for prisons in Sindh province, has initiated an investigation, underscoring that any security lapses on the part of prison staff would not be taken lightly. The superintendent defended the prison's security measures, attributing the situation to the natural disaster rather than lapses in security protocols.
Outside the prison, families of other inmates have expressed their frustration, voicing protests as visitations have been postponed. The chaotic aftermath of the earthquake and the prison break has sparked serious concerns over prison safety and inmate management in Pakistan.
