Bolsonaro's Health Declines Amidst Legal Battles and Coup Allegations

The former president of Brazil faces worsening health issues following surgery, coinciding with pressing legal challenges related to coup allegations.

Jair Bolsonaro's health has deteriorated after abdominal surgery, leading to intensive care treatment and upcoming medical tests. This comes as he faces summons for coup charges following his allegations of inciting his supporters to storm government buildings post the 2022 election defeat. Bolsonaro's future in politics hangs in the balance as he could face significant jail time if convicted.

The health of Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, has taken a turn for the worse following intestinal surgery earlier this month, according to reports from his medical team. The 70-year-old Bolsonaro remains in intensive care and is set to undergo additional tests.

While in the hospital, Bolsonaro received an unexpected visit from a court official who delivered a summons, demanding he provides his defense against coup charges within five days. The urgency of this legal action coincides with the backdrop of his alleged involvement in directing a right-wing coup attempt after losing the 2022 presidential election to the left-leaning President Lula da Silva.

During the occurrence of the purported coup attempt, Bolsonaro's supporters were reported to have stormed government buildings, and police investigations have revealed details of alleged discussions he had with individuals, including military figures, regarding plans to maintain power through a coup. Bolsonaro has consistently denied these allegations, framing them as part of a political witch-hunt aimed at him by his adversaries.

Bolsonaro's recent intestinal surgery was necessitated by ongoing health complications following a stabbing incident during his 2018 campaign in Minas Gerais, where he lost about 40% of his blood and required emergency medical intervention. The individual responsible for the attack has since been declared unfit for trial based on mental health evaluations.

In a twist of circumstances, a day prior to receiving the summons, Bolsonaro engaged with the public via a live YouTube broadcast from his hospital bed alongside three of his sons, despite doctors advising against visitors. The Brazilian Supreme Court interpreted this broadcast as indicative of his capacity to be summoned and notified regarding court proceedings.

Despite his current health complications and legal challenges, Bolsonaro had previously expressed intentions to re-enter the presidential race in 2026, although he currently faces a ban from seeking office. Furthermore, if found guilty of coup-related charges, he risks a lengthy prison sentence of up to 40 years, casting doubt on his political aspirations moving forward.
