Deadly Car Bombing Claims Lives of Agricultural Workers in Northern Syria
At least 15 fatalities, primarily women, reported in recent attack amidst ongoing regional turmoil.
In a tragic incident, a car bomb blast in northern Syria has claimed the lives of at least 15 people, of whom 14 were women. The attack occurred while a vehicle transporting agricultural workers was traveling on the outskirts of Manbij, a city located to the east of Aleppo. The Syria Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets, reported that an additional 15 women sustained injuries, with several in critical condition, suggesting that the death toll may continue to rise.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for this bombing, which marks one of the deadliest attacks in the region since the downfall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime in December. Alarmingly, this car bomb incident follows closely behind another explosion in Manbij just three days earlier, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two children and a woman.
According to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring organization based in the UK, the previous blast occurred near a military position, resulting in the deaths of nine people, several of whom were identified as pro-Turkish fighters. This highlights the strategic tensions within the area, characterized by clashes between the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) factions and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which are U.S.-supported.
The SNA captured Manbij on December 9 after the SDF-affiliated Manbij Military Council withdrew from the region. However, following this takeover, the SDF has initiated a counter-offensive, continuing the cycle of violence that has plagued the region since the power shifts resulting from the civil war. With competing interests and complex alliances, northern Syria remains an unstable area, leaving civilians vulnerable to attacks amid the ongoing conflict.
