Arson Spree Targets Multiple Churches in New Zealand
A suspected arson attack has left seven churches damaged in Masterton, New Zealand, sparking outrage and calls for community support.
In the early hours of Saturday, a concerning string of suspected arson incidents unfolded across seven churches in Masterton, New Zealand. This spree led to "moderate to significant" damage to four churches, while evidence suggested three additional buildings were targeted without igniting. Local fire crews from various areas responded promptly to the emergency calls at approximately 4:30 AM (15:30 GMT Friday).
Authorities have labeled these incidents as suspicious and have passed the case to the police for investigation, though no suspects have been apprehended yet. Among the churches affected were the Anglican Church Of The Epiphany, St Patrick's Catholic Church Masterton, Masterton Baptist Church, and Equippers Church Masterton. Witness reports highlighted broken windows, charred furnishings, and damage consistent with fire impact. Fortunately, all fires were successfully extinguished, and there were no injuries reported.
The events have left the community in shock. Mayor Gary Caffell expressed disbelief at the unexpected attacks, emphasizing that such occurrences are seldom seen in their locality. He stated, "You just don't expect something this sort of thing to happen, and particularly in a place like Masterton." Local MP Mike Butterick conveyed his sorrow, calling first responders "heroes" for their efforts.
Simultaneously, a nearby funeral home that features a chapel was also set ablaze but, thankfully, was unoccupied at that time. The police are now appealing to the public for any information related to the incidents, implementing patrols in Masterton and surrounding towns such as Featherston and Carterton to help reassure residents.
Social media has been abuzz with a video showing a man claiming responsibility for the atrocities, exhibiting anti-religious and anti-monarchist sentiments. As New Zealand grapples with its history of violence against religious institutions—such as the two mass shootings in Christchurch that claimed 51 lives and numerous arson attacks in past years—the community is left yearning for safety and solidarity in the face of these troubling developments.
