Search Continues for Missing Soldier in Lithuanian Military Tragedy

The U.S. Army has confirmed the recovery of three soldiers’ bodies who were involved in a military exercise in Lithuania. As rescue missions are intensified, a fourth soldier remains unaccounted for, prompting a multi-national effort involving Lithuanian and Polish forces.

The search for four U.S. soldiers, who were last seen during military exercises in Lithuania, has yielded tragic results with the discovery of three bodies in a muddy bog near Pabradė. These soldiers were part of the 1st Armoured Brigade Combat Team, stationed in Lithuania under Operation Atlantic Resolve, which aims to strengthen NATO's deterrent in response to increased tensions due to Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The soldiers were participating in a repair mission for an M88A2 Hercules vehicle—critical for recovering damaged tanks—when they went missing on March 25. The following day, search teams located their vehicle submerged in the bog, leading to a complex retrieval operation. U.S. and NATO resources, including the U.S. Army, Navy, and forces from Lithuania and Poland, were deployed to extract the vehicle, a task complicated by the challenging conditions of mud and zero visibility.

In a heartfelt statement, Maj Gen Christopher Norrie emphasized the personal loss felt within the military community and affirmed that the search would not cease until all soldiers are accounted for. There is still ongoing hope for the safe return of the fourth soldier, who had not yet been found.
