Michael Paul Brown, who served in the US Army from 2001 to 2005 and was deployed to Iraq, is accused of opening fire at the Owl Bar in Anaconda on August 1. Following the attack, law enforcement agencies at multiple levels initiated a manhunt, discovering that Brown fled into the nearby foothills, shedding his clothing to evade capture.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting, which occurred nearly immediately after Brown reportedly entered the bar he was known to frequent. The victims include barmaid Nancy Lauretta Kelley, 64, and three male patrons: Daniel Edwin Baillie, 59, David Allen Leach, 70, and Tony Wayne Palm, 74. The establishment's owner, David Gwerder, expressed shock at the incident, suggesting that Brown may have simply "snapped," as he had no known disputes with the victims.
Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen announced the arrest, expressing pride in the comprehensive efforts by law enforcement to locate Brown. Following the attack, police found a white Ford F-150 pickup truck that Brown allegedly used as his getaway vehicle, but he managed to escape initially.
