British Tourist Arrested in Namibia on Child Exploitation Charges
A British national faces serious allegations of sexual misconduct against minors from the indigenous San community in Namibia.
A British national has been arrested in Namibia for allegedly sexually molesting minors and taking nude photographs of them. Douglas Robert Brook, believed to be 65 years old, is accused of targeting young boys and girls from the indigenous San community while on holiday in central Namibia. Local police reported that Brook faces 38 charges, which include serious offenses such as rape, indecent assault, and child exploitation.
According to reports, Brook, who arrived in Namibia only a week prior, allegedly lured a group of 34 children with sweets and money to take their photographs while they were naked, prompting an investigation into his activities. The UK Foreign Office has confirmed that it is in communication with Namibian authorities regarding this case.
Maureen Mbeha, a regional police authority, stated that evidence indicated the tourist sexually assaulted 16 girls and 14 boys. Some photographs depicting the children were discovered on Brook’s camera, which was subsequently confiscated by police following his arrest. He made a court appearance at the Grootfontein Magistrate's Court, where his bail request was denied, and he was remanded in custody. The court has postponed proceedings to next month to allow the state prosecutor additional time to conduct investigations.
The Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism condemned the alleged actions as "deeply disrespectful" to the cultural heritage of the San community. In a statement, the ministry emphasized the unacceptability of exploiting indigenous communities for photography or any purpose. Namibia, known for its stunning desert landscapes and rich cultural diversity, is a highly regarded tourist destination, reinforcing the need for respect towards local customs and communities by visitors.
