Iranian Presidency Responds to Public Outcry by Dismissing Deputy Over Antarctic Cruise

President Masoud Pezeshkian dismisses Shahram Dabiri for a controversial trip to Antarctica, highlighting economic challenges faced by the nation.

The Iranian president has terminated his deputy's position following public backlash against a lavish Antarctic cruise taken during Nowruz, emphasizing the need for accountability amid economic hardships in the country.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has taken decisive action by firing Shahram Dabiri, his deputy for parliamentary affairs, due to an extravagant trip to Antarctica with his wife. The presidential office condemned Dabiri's actions as "unjustifiable and unacceptable," particularly in light of the severe economic difficulties currently affecting Iran.

The dismissal comes after images of Dabiri and his wife on board the MV Plancius, which was en route to the South Pole, surfaced on social media, sparking public outrage. In a statement, Pezeshkian characterized Dabiri's travel, regardless of personal financing, as "indefensible" in a nation where many are grappling with economic strain exacerbated by Western sanctions related to Iran's foreign policy actions.

Peaking during the Persian new year, Nowruz is a significant time of celebration, but Dabiri's cruise sharply resonated with the ongoing economic hardships facing citizens, including an unemployment rate of 8.4% and an inflation rate of 29.5%, as reported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The president highlighted that such indulgent conduct starkly contradicts the fundamental principle of simplicity that should guide public officials. While tourism to Antarctica has gained traction in recent years, typically this type of expedition appeals to scientists and seasoned adventurers, raising questions about the appropriateness of such travel for government officials amid economic adversity.

The costs for such Antarctic expeditions can start at approximately $6,685 (£5,187), and details regarding the specific travel arrangements taken by Dabiri from Iran remain unclear. The president's decision to remove Dabiri came in response to public pressure from his supporters, signaling a heightened expectation of accountability within the government.

Pezeshkian, who ascended to the presidency with promises to rejuvenate the economy and enhance the daily lives of Iranians, appears to face mounting criticism for maintaining standards of integrity and leadership in times of national hardship following the tragic death of his predecessor, Ebrahim Raisi, in a helicopter crash.
