K-Pop Industry Scrutinized in South Korean Parliament Over Workplace Bullying
Hanni's testimony at the National Assembly highlights persistent issues within the K-pop industry, underscoring the need for better artist protections.
K-pop star Hanni, a prominent member of the group NewJeans, recently testified before South Korea's National Assembly about bullying and labor issues in the K-pop industry. The hearing focused on the working conditions of entertainers, many of whom fall outside the protection of traditional labor laws. Although eagerly anticipated, Hanni’s testimony revealed little beyond a previously discussed incident where she experienced workplace harassment that management failed to address due to lack of evidence. The industry is known for rigorous and sometimes harsh conditions for artists. This has prompted public disputes, like that between NewJeans' executive producer and their label, Hybe, which also manages BTS. The parliamentary committee, led by An Ho-young, seeks to establish better protections for artists. Amid ongoing tensions within their label, NewJeans has made bold moves, including issuing ultimatums to Hybe, showcasing growing unrest and demands for change within the tightly-controlled K-pop realm.
