Rising Death Toll Amidst Struggle for Humanitarian Aid in Gaza
As fierce military actions continue, Palestinians seeking aid face deadly circumstances, leading to critical discussions on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Dozens of Palestinians have been killed while seeking essential aid in Gaza, according to hospital officials. Two hospitals reported that 25 individuals died overnight near a convoy transporting food supplies organized by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in the Netzarim corridor, an area categorized as an Israeli military zone in central Gaza.
The Hamas-led Civil Defense agency has claimed that the Israeli forces opened fire on individuals approaching the aid locations, with reports also indicating some victims were injured or killed by heavy lorries or fellow Palestinians amidst the chaos. In response, the Israeli military stated that warning shots were fired at individuals they deemed suspicious.
In addition, six people reportedly lost their lives due to Israeli gunfire near another GHF distribution site in Rafah, as recorded by Nasser hospital in Khan Younis. The Israeli military is currently investigating these incidents.
Despite the rising tensions, the GHF announced that over 43,000 food parcels were successfully distributed at their centers on Wednesday, despite the deadly occurrences nearby. However, since the GHF's operation began on May 26, there have been tragic incidents associated with aid distribution almost daily. Gaza's Hamas-led health ministry reported that 223 individuals have been killed and 1,858 injured over the past two weeks while attempting to access aid.
The GHF, which employs US private security contractors, was established to circumvent the United Nations as the primary source of humanitarian aid for Gaza's 2.1 million residents. Both the UN and other humanitarian organizations have declined cooperation, citing concerns that the GHF's approach violates foundational principles of impartiality and neutrality.
Warnings have been amplified regarding the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, characterized by severe food shortages after a months-long Israeli blockade, which was partially lifted three weeks ago. While the US and Israel defend the GHF's methods as necessary to prevent aid from being misappropriated by Hamas, criticisms arise from claims that such mismanagement is not a widespread issue, with Hamas denying such accusations.
The ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza was initiated following a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli casualties and the abduction of 251 others. Tragically, reports indicate that at least 55,104 Palestinians have died in Gaza since the onset of these escalated hostilities, according to local health ministry figures.
