Magnus Carlsen to Compete Again After Dress Code Changes in Chess
Norway’s chess sensation Magnus Carlsen reverses his withdrawal after the International Chess Federation adjusts its attire guidelines.
Magnus Carlsen, the reigning world chess champion, will re-enter the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships after the International Chess Federation (FIDE) decided to revise its dress code, permitting "elegant minor deviations." Initially quitting the tournament due to a jeans-related dress code disagreement, Carlsen expressed his intentions to compete again on Monday, confident he would don his jeans while playing.
The decision by FIDE follows Carlsen's earlier withdrawal when informed he could not continue wearing jeans, despite having played several rounds in a jacket and jeans combination. As tensions escalated, Carlsen asserted he was prepared to change outfits for the following day but felt it unjust to have been asked to change immediately. This led to his abrupt decision to leave New York, where the tournament is held, stating, "Nobody wants to back down... I'll probably head off to somewhere where the weather is a bit nicer than here."
FIDE’s president Arkadi Dvorkovich commented on the updated dress code, emphasizing that while official attire remains essential, the inclusion of tasteful jeans will be permissible. The federation hopes that players will respect the spirit of the tournament while utilizing this new flexibility. The player community has varied opinions on the attire regulations, with some seeing the needed evolution of standards in modern competition.
Carlsen utilized social channels to share his sentiments regarding the dress code, lightheartedly posting a picture of his outfit with the caption "OOTD" (outfit of the day). Despite his casual dress, Carlsen remains a formidable figure in chess who has sparked debates in the sport, including a recent cheating scandal which resolved amicably.
Ranked globally as chess's No. 1 player, Carlsen's return will not only reinforce his presence in the tournament but also possibly reshape community perspectives on traditional attire in competitive settings.
