In brief

ByteDance has terminated an intern accused of deliberately interfering with an AI model, while maintaining that commercial operations remain unaffected and asserting that damage claims are overstated.

The controversy surrounding ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, has heightened after the dismissal of an intern who allegedly "maliciously interfered" with the training of one of its artificial intelligence (AI) models. The Chinese tech behemoth clarified that while the employee's actions prompted their termination, they asserted that the reports surrounding the incident contained "some exaggerations and inaccuracies."The intern was part of the commercialisation technology team as opposed to the dedicated AI Lab, leading to questions regarding their qualifications for such complex tasks. In a proactive move, ByteDance notified both the intern's university and relevant industry organizations after the incident. The company’s popular generative AI model, which is akin to ChatGPT and known as Doubao, continues to thrive despite this hiccup. ByteDance emphasized that its commercial operations, specifically their large language AI models, experienced no disruption following the intern's interference. They also dismissed claims that the interference had caused financial repercussions exceeding $10 million, highlighting that the claims regarding the damage were unfounded. In recent years, ByteDance has channeled substantial investments into AI technology. This initiative not only sustains the functionality of Doubao but also extends to various applications, including a text-to-video tool named Jimeng, signaling that the broader strategy remains intact despite internal complications. As the company grapples with this incident, it remains committed to augmenting its AI capabilities within the competitive landscape of technology innovation.
