Three residents of California were sentenced for their involvement in a peculiar insurance fraud scheme that used a person in a bear costume to damage luxury vehicles.

The California Insurance Department revealed that the suspects staged incidents in a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes, submitting fraudulent claims totaling nearly $142,000. This operation was recorded and has been dubbed “Operation Bear Claw.”

Two men and one woman from the Los Angeles area entered no contest to felony insurance fraud charges and received sentences that included a weekend jail program, alongside probation. Additionally, two of them were ordered to repay over $50,000 in restitution.

A fourth individual connected to the case will appear in court in September. Authorities uncovered several videos showing a bear moving inside the luxury cars, which were submitted alongside their claims. However, a biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reviewed the footage and confirmed it depicted a person in a bear suit rather than an actual bear.

During the investigation, detectives executed a search warrant and found the bear costume in the suspects’ residence. The unusual scheme has highlighted how some individuals may resort to elaborate means in attempts to defraud insurance companies.

This case has drawn public attention not only for its oddity but also for raising awareness about the challenges of wildlife interactions in California, where bears are frequently seen rummaging through trash and seeking food in urban areas.
