Charlotte, N.C. — Community leaders and local officials have denounced the impending federal immigration enforcement operation set to take place in North Carolina's largest city, describing it as an invasive action and urging residents to peacefully protest.”
Mecklenburg County Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell, emphasizing her immigrant roots, remarked, “A time when a felonious reality TV personality is occupying the White House. Now they want to film an episode of Shock and Awe show here in our city.”
The announcement followed Sheriff Garry McFadden's confirmation of a federal operation commencing imminently, though he did not specify the officials involved. The community is apprehensive given previous enforcement actions in Chicago and similar Democratic-led areas.
State Representative Jordan Lopez remarked, “We’ve seen undisciplined agents pointing weapons at unarmed civilians, the indiscriminate roundup of civilians.”
Officials have reported no formal notification regarding the operation from the Trump administration, but are proactively preparing by equipping volunteers with training on how to protest and safeguard against aggressive enforcement. “We’re reacting to an invasion,” stated Héctor Vaca from Action NC, condemning the situation as a 'racist campaign of terror.'
Trump has defended ICE operations in Democratic-run cities as a necessity for public safety and crime reduction. Advocates warn against conflating crime with immigration status.
Charlotte’s community is known for its diversity, with more than 150,000 foreign-born residents comprising around 40% of the city’s demographics. Incoming council members, including Colombian-born JD Mazuera Arias, assert a commitment to ensuring resources aren’t diverted to immigration enforcement while using their platforms to represent immigrant populations.
Cameron Pruette from the Freedom Center for Social Justice rallied community members to support immigrant-owned businesses and to respond to actions against them with moral clarity. “We will not confuse cruelty with safety,” he asserted, emphasizing unity against division and fear.
