The Chicago man who allegedly doused a woman in gasoline and lit her on fire on 17 November was a 'career criminal', the White House has said.

Lawrence Reed who was arrested for the crime had 72 prior arrests that include eight felony convictions and seven misdemeanors, according to the White House.

The victim, 26-year-old Bethany MaGee, survived the attack but is 'now fighting for her life with horrific burns', the White House stated.

In court, Mr. Reed reportedly shouted 'I'm guilty' three times amidst warnings of a potential life sentence for charges including terrorism.

The incident has prompted political finger-pointing, with the White House attributing blame to Democrats' crime policies. Illinois and Chicago, both under Democratic leadership, face criticism particularly regarding the state's elimination of cash bail, which allows individuals to remain free pending trial.

Mayor Johnson characterized the attack as a 'tragic incident', adding his prayers were with the victim.

Reed, 50, has faced mental health issues and amassed numerous arrests over the years. Recently, he was charged with aggravated battery and released on electronic monitoring, which prosecutors opposed.

According to court documents, the assault on MaGee occurred while she was on the train, suggesting a reckless disregard for others' safety. Video evidence reportedly shows Reed watching as MaGee fought to extinguish the flames.

In his statements, Johnson pointed out systemic failures in both criminal justice and mental health services, noting Reed's persistent danger to others. Johnson had previously expressed intentions to divert resources from policing but promised against further reductions in police funding during his mayoral campaign.
