Four children were among at least 14 people injured in an overnight Russian air attack on the capital Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said.
Two high-rise residential buildings were hit in the strikes, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported, without detailing whether these were direct hits or collateral damage from falling debris.
All individuals injured are receiving medical assistance, with some being hospitalized, according to Kyiv's military administration.
In response to these attacks, Russian air defenses reportedly intercepted a drone directed at Moscow.
The strikes come amidst heightened political tensions as US President Donald Trump stated he would only meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin if he was certain about reaching a deal. This was shortly after plans for a meeting in Budapest failed to materialize. Trump expressed disappointment, remarking on his historically good relationship with Putin while lamenting the lack of progress in diplomatic negotiations.
Trump intends to seek assistance from China in attempting to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine, as peace efforts have become a focal point of his recent political agenda. A previous summit with Putin generated little advancement, and Trump conveyed his frustrations regarding the stagnation in talks.
However, senior Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev indicated that diplomatic solutions within Russia, Ukraine, and the US are closer than ever, referencing Ukraine's willingness to negotiate based on current battle lines.
Despite the commencement of new sanctions targeting major Russian oil companies, the outlook for peace talks remains complex as all parties navigate their interests amid ongoing conflict.
