Eleven Killed in Mass Shooting Near Durban, South Africa

At least 11 fatalities were confirmed in a violent shooting at a private residence in KwaMakhutha, a township near Durban.

According to police, gunmen stormed the house late on Tuesday, opening fire on 15 occupants. Ten victims were slain on scene, and four others sustained injuries that later proved fatal.

Police said the victims may have been involved in illegal activities, but have withheld details to protect ongoing investigations. The motive remains unclear, though a “feud between rival groupings” has not been ruled out.

Investigators confirmed that the house was hosting a party when three armed men entered. Among the deceased was a pregnant woman, underscoring the tragedy of the incident.

Video footage from a local news outlet captured gunmen setting a vehicle ablaze before fleeing the scene. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

South Africa’s overall murder rate remains among the world’s highest, with police data indicating more than 60 killings per day. In recent weeks, the country has seen a surge in brutal murders, including the disposal of multiple bodies in public spaces.

The incident adds to a series of mass‑shootings in the region, including a tavern shooting in Johannesburg last year. President Cyril Ramaphosa has highlighted organised crime as “the most immediate threat to our democracy” and has mobilised the army to assist police.
