A speeding vehicle struck a three‑wheeled motorcycle on a major highway linking Kabul with eastern Afghanistan on the evening of Saturday, 8 November 2026, killing seven people and injuring two others in the Laghman province, Xinhua reports.

The collision occurred in the Mashli area of Qarghayi district, a road common to travelers heading to and from the capital, with the incident taking place along a heavily used transit corridor that serves as a key link to eastern provinces.

According to officials at Laghman's provincial police office, the crash unfolded when the vehicle, reportedly travelling faster than the legal limit, collided with the motorcycle that was in motion along the same carriageway.

Seven of the passengers or riders in the fast‑moving vehicle were found dead at the scene, while two others sustained injuries that required immediate medical attention.

All deceased and survivors were transported by ambulance to Laghman's provincial hospital, where medical staff performed emergency procedures and managed the wounded passengers.

The provincial police are currently conducting a formal investigation into the causes of the collision, with statements indicating that they are examining vehicle speed records and operational protocols for the road.

While the incident drew national attention for its severity, local authorities emphasized that the highway remains a critical route for trade, commerce, and travel between Kabul and eastern provinces, underscoring the importance of road safety measures.

Local residents reported that traffic along the corridor was dense during the time of the accident, a factor that may have contributed to the event, according to statements made by police during a press briefing.

Xinhua quoted the officer from the provincial police office who confirmed that investigations were underway and that the cause of the driver’s speeding was still uncertain, with possible factors including mechanical failure, driver distraction, or other violations.

The fatal collision highlights ongoing concerns about traffic safety on Afghanistan's major arteries, as officials and civil society groups call for stricter enforcement of speed limits and improved road infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
