At least five people have been killed in Russian strikes across Ukraine after a massive overnight aerial bombardment targeted several regions across the country.

A 61-year-old woman was killed when a drone hit an electric train in Kharkiv early on Tuesday, authorities reported, while other fatalities occurred in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Poltava.

Officials indicated that these strikes were among the most intense in ten days, coming just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had cautioned his nation about an impending massive strike during his nightly address.

Russian strikes against energy infrastructure also severed Moldova's critical power link with Europe, according to President Maia Sandu, who cautioned that the situation was still fragile.

On the night of the attack, sirens rang out across Ukraine as Russia unleashed a barrage comprising seven ballistic missiles, 23 cruise missiles, and 392 drones, as stated by the Ukrainian Air Force.

Air defense units managed to intercept 25 missiles and 365 drones, the Air Force confirmed.

In a post on X on Tuesday, President Zelensky emphasized the dire need for enhanced protective measures to safeguard lives from such repeated assaults. He reiterated the critical status of national defenses in light of the ongoing conflict.

This latest wave of attacks marks a pattern of significant Russian offensives occurring approximately every week or ten days, raising alarm among citizens and military officials about the consistency and severity of the air strikes.

As the attacks focused on cities beyond the capital Kyiv, widespread damage reported across eleven regions highlighted the scale of the assault, especially in the south-eastern city of Zaporizhzhia, which faced drone and missile strikes, resulting in casualties.

Local resident Dymtro Zaiets described the chaos, stating that he and his family escaped a devastating explosion with little more than the clothes on their backs.

Russia's recent actions are compounded by the backdrop of declining military advances in eastern Ukraine, while Ukrainian and US diplomatic efforts are ongoing to address the war's escalation.

The situation remains tense, as the international community closely monitors the ongoing offensive and its ramifications for regional stability and security.
