The Eaton Fire, California’s second‑most destructive blaze, claimed 19 lives and razed 9,000 structures. Those who fought the flames—including Pasadena Fire Captain David Marquez—wore the damage: insomnia, chronic cough, headaches and fatigue.
Marquez said he and his crew “were so desperate” that they tried .glutathione inhalation—a 30‑minute exposure to the antioxidant, produced by a compounding pharmacy. He reported an immediate improvement: his symptoms faded “just after the worst exposure” of his career.
Glutathione is touted by naturopaths and volunteer clinicians who accompany crews to wildfires in the west. The Integrated Health Action Network claims the treatment can flush toxic metals and reduce long‑term cancer risk, but it admits the evidence is anecdotal and “not peer‑reviewed”.
The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) issued a warning months ago, citing two pharmacy recalls of contaminated glutathione and “scientific trials” that found some vitamins increased cancer risk. IAFF spokesman Sean DeCrane notes the therapy’s lack of safety data and reports firefighters who felt ‘worse’ after treatment, blaming metal withdrawal.
Occupational pulmonologist Dr. Coralynn Sack adds that no clinical trials exist for glutathione in firefighters, and that the debate shifts focus away from proven measures such as respirators, decontamination protocols and updated personal protective equipment.
Regulatory hurdles also play a role. California tried to tighten glutathione prescription rules, prompting firefighter testimony in Sacramento and the eventual withdrawal of the regulation. The debate underscores the tension between innovative treatments and the need for evidence and oversight.
Firefighters like Greg Fonts stress a cultural shift: the view that “cancer was part of the job” is fading. Many younger crews are more health‑savvy, but the IAFF remains cautious until rigorous, double‑blind studies confirm the antioxidant’s benefits and safety.
In the short term, glutathione inhalation may offer symptomatic relief, yet the field awaits robust research to determine whether it is a genuine therapeutic option or a placebo. In the meantime, fire departments continue to prioritize standard protective gear and proper decontamination as the proven means of reducing long‑term health risks.
