A Russian general has been killed in a car bombing in Moscow, officials have said.
Russia's Investigative Committee stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died on Monday morning when an explosive device, which was planted under his car, detonated.
At 56 years of age, Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' operational training department, as per the committee's report.
One theory being explored is that the bomb may have been planted with assistance from Ukrainian intelligence services; however, Ukraine has yet to comment on the situation.
Following the explosion, investigators have been dispatched to the scene, which is located in a car park near an apartment block in the southern region of Moscow.
Images from the site depict a severely damaged white car with blown-out doors, surrounded by other vehicles in the parking lot.
Since the onset of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, several military officials have been the target of attacks within the Russian capital.
Gen Yaroslav Moskalik was reported killed in a car bomb attack in April, while Gen Igor Kirillov lost his life in December 2024 due to a remotely detonated device hidden in a scooter.
A source from Ukraine subsequently informed the BBC that Kirillov's death was attributed to Ukraine's security service, although this information has never been officially confirmed. It is standard practice for Ukraine to refrain from publicly admitting responsibility for targeted attacks.
