Lebanon extradites former Syrian general to Damascus
On 8 August a former senior officer of the ousted Bashar al‑Assad regime was detained in Beirut and transferred into Syrian custody, the first such extradition since the regime’s collapse.
Maj Gen Adel Issa, 67, faces charges including homicide, torture and political violence that the Syrian interior ministry claims stem from his service in Deir Ezzor until 2016.
The handover followed diplomatic pressure from Syria’s new leadership on Lebanon after the transfer of more than 200 former regime officials. The case will be reviewed by a referral judge in Damascus to decide whether it proceeds to criminal court.
In recent months the new Syrian authorities, led by President Ahmed al‑Sharaa, have pursued prosecutions of former regime officials, culminating in death sentences in absentia for Bashar al‑Assad and his brother Maher.
Issa has denied the charges, but the extradition signals a shift in accountability dynamics as Syria seeks to address wartime crimes.
