Anthony Joshua's driver has been charged following a tragic car crash in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two of his team members, police confirmed. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged at the Sagamu Magistrates' Court on Friday for causing death by dangerous driving, among other allegations. The incident occurred when Joshua's team vehicle collided with a stationary truck while traveling on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway on New Year’s Day.
Both Latif Ayodele, Joshua's personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength coach, were pronounced dead at the scene. Joshua was hospitalized with injuries but has since been discharged.
Kayode faces four charges: causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver's license. He was granted bail set at 5,000,000 Naira (approximately £2,578), while the next hearing is scheduled for January 20.
Officials reported that Joshua was deeply affected by the incident, as both Ayodele and Ghami were not just his colleagues but close friends. He visited the funeral home where their bodies were being prepared for repatriation, highlighting the personal loss amidst the legal proceedings.
A family member confirmed that Joshua was en route to visit relatives in Sagamu for New Year festivities when the crash occurred. Just before the incident, he had shared a light moment on social media with Ayodele, underscoring the tragic turn of events. Promoter Eddie Hearn publicly paid tribute to the deceased, expressing condolences and emphasizing the deep impact their loss has on their friends and family.
The unfolding case has drawn attention not only for its legal implications but also for the broader conversation it sparks regarding road safety in Nigeria, particularly as high-profile individuals navigate their public and personal lives.
