Staten Island, New York – On 27 August, Thomas Fahmy left his home to walk to the dentist when a sudden flash of bright white light struck the sky above him. The lightning hit immediately, forcing him to collapse to the ground.
Fahmy said he had never experienced sensations such as the ones he felt when the bolt struck. He described the incident in a CBS News interview as "horrific", expressing surprise at the intensity of the event.
After the strike, a local resident called 911. Fahmy was transported to a nearby hospital where doctors examined him and he was released with no serious injuries. The incident has spurred local authorities to remind residents to seek shelter during thunderstorms.
