In brief

Following a diplomatic crisis over the asylum granted to former Peruvian prime minister Betssy Chávez, Mexico and Peru have agreed to restore ties. Both nations cited historic friendship and respect for international law as reasons for reconciliation. The row began after Chávez sought refuge in Mexico in November 2025, amid accusations related to a 2022 coup attempt that led to the imprisonment of former President Pedro Castillo. With a new president, Keiko Fujimori, taking office, the two countries signaled a move toward normalising relations while leaving open the possibility of extradition. The restoration is seen as a step toward stabilising relations across Latin America.

Mexico and Peru have agreed to re‑establish diplomatic relations after a row over the granting of asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who was charged in connection with a 2022 coup attempt.

In a joint statement released on 7 August, Lima and Mexico City said that “historic ties of brotherhood, friendship and cooperation” prompted the reconciliation. The two countries also reaffirmed their respect for international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

The diplomatic break began when Chávez sought asylum in the Mexican embassy in November 2025, after her imprisonment over alleged involvement in an attempt to dissolve Congress. She was released on bail in September 2025 and later granted safe passage into Mexico.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed Chávez, underscoring support for former President Pedro Castillo’s ousted government, who was impeached after attempting to dismiss Congress. Both Castillo and Chávez were sentenced to more than 11 years in prison last November.

The restoration of ties comes shortly after the inauguration of a new Peruvian president, Keiko Fujimori, signalling a shift in regional diplomatic dynamics.
