MADISON, Wis. (AP) — In a notable case from Milwaukee, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, a 31-year-old immigrant, has been deported after he was arrested for illegal reentry into the United States, reportedly with the help of Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan.

Flores-Ruiz pleaded guilty in September to the charges of illegal reentry as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. Following this development, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed on social media that he has been deported. However, they did not specify whether he was returned to Mexico, where he originally hailed from, or another location.

This situation escalated from Flores-Ruiz's arrest, which stemmed from a physical altercation with a roommate. His status as an undocumented immigrant was revealed when the local jail forwarded his fingerprints to federal databases. At the time of his hearing on April 18, U.S. immigration agents were poised to arrest him, but Judge Dugan allegedly facilitated his escape through a private door from her courtroom, allowing him to evade the agents awaiting his arrest, prompting a foot chase that ultimately ended with his capture.

Flores-Ruiz had an extensive history in the U.S. after sneaking across the border from Mexico at the age of 18 and working in various restaurants for over a decade. He has been incarcerated for the last seven months, and after pleading guilty, he was sentenced to time served before deportation.

Judge Dugan is facing serious accusations herself. She was indicted in May on charges of obstruction of justice for allegedly aiding Flores-Ruiz in avoiding arrest. Her trial is approaching, set to commence on December 15. If convicted, she could face a maximum of six years in federal prison. The Department of Homeland Security condemned her actions, suggesting they undermine the integrity of the court system.

Dugan has denied any wrongdoing, defending her courtroom procedures, but her case has ignited debates over the role of judges in immigration matters and the expected balance between enforcing the law and acting within legal frameworks designed to protect individual rights. The Milwaukee County Chief Judge previously emphasized that courtrooms should remain a sanctuary and safeguard from immigration enforcement actions.

Flores-Ruiz's case and Dugan's alleged misconduct highlight ongoing tensions around immigration policies and practices within the judicial system, sparking discussions on accountability, the rights of immigrants in legal proceedings, and the implications of judicial overreach.
