RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Federal agents have arrested over 250 people during an immigration crackdown that has taken place in Charlotte, North Carolina, as confirmed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Wednesday.
The operation, which began over the weekend, is part of President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement strategy aimed at cities that lean Democratic, mirroring campaigns previously conducted in major urban areas like Chicago and Los Angeles.
As the crackdown expanded to suburbs around the state capital of Raleigh, anxiety grew within immigrant communities, particularly in areas densely populated by non-U.S. born residents.
Dubbed 'Operation Charlotte's Web', the arrest numbers announced by DHS doubled the initial figures provided at the beginning of the week. Officials stated that the operation targets some of the most dangerous criminal illegal aliens. However, little information has been shared regarding those arrested or the future scope of the operations, keeping local communities tense.
The crackdown coincides with a significant response from local residents, with protests emerging in opposition. Approximately 100 demonstrators gathered outside a Home Depot store in Charlotte, brandishing signs demanding an end to ICE's presence in their communities.
Community leaders report that school attendance in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods has decreased, and local businesses have closed in fear of facing federal agents.
The crackdown has not only resulted in arrests but has also instilled a pervasive fear in areas like Cary, where nearly 20% of the population originated from other countries.
As the operation in North Carolina unfolds, it appears that border agents are preparing for a subsequent crackdown in New Orleans, with about 250 agents expected to deploy there.
Gregory Bovino, appearing as a key figure in these enforcement operations, has drawn criticism for the methods employed during these sweeps. As such operations continue, Discovery Health Services has chosen not to disclose detailed operational specifics for safety and security reasons.
