In brief

Spokane, Washington, endured fires that destroyed nearly a thousand buildings, leaving 65,000 residents forced to evacuate. The fires crossed a natural river barrier and burned through multiple neighborhoods. A local man charged with arson deliberately ignited the blaze on a dry, windy day. Community leaders and families are rallying for recovery, while no deaths were reported. The incident underscores the growing threat of wildfires in the Pacific Northwest.

Last year a family from Spokane was forced to flee when a brushfire threatened their home. The emergency evacuation took just a few hours. But this year the fire moved faster and higher, sweeping across the city and leaving a trail of ruin. A dark sky filled with smoke raced toward the hillside that usually shields the city from such blazes.

The scale of the damage is unprecedented. Roughly 900 buildings have been destroyed, damaging a wide swath of neighborhoods. Fires have chased the river that once acted as a natural barrier, breaching it with alarming speed due to high winds and dry conditions.

The municipal council and fire service continue to battle three large fires that remain less than 40% contained. At the same time they are planning recovery for families who have lost everything. Two fronts of response have forced the city to adapt: stop the fire now and look after those displaced.

Community leaders are calling for better fire prevention. One resident expressed anger at the widespread disposal of lawn equipment that could spark fires in dry grass. She urged residents to use their brains and help keep the city safe.

The suspect, a 37‑year‑old local man, admitted to setting the fire on a chosen dry day in hopes of igniting a larger blaze. Police have placed him under arrest and ordered a mental competency evaluation. He had a prior criminal background that includes a fatal incident that ended in 2010.
