ATLANTA (AP) — Bags of ice-thwarting salt aren’t typically popular at Bates Ace Hardware in Atlanta, but store manager Lewis Pane sold out of 275 bags in one morning as residents prepared for an impending major storm forecasted to deliver heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain across a broad section of the United States.

Before 8 a.m., Pane reported receiving 30 online orders for ice melt. Residents sprinkle the salts on the ground ahead of storms to prevent ice formation. Pane mentioned, It’s impossible to get right now. Special trips to the warehouse have been necessary to re-stock due to demand.

The storm is expected to commence on Friday, stretching from New Mexico to New England and covering the Deep South. Experts warn the potential damage could rival that of a major hurricane.

Meteorologists predict that ice could linger on pavements and roads due to slow temperature rises in many areas. Accumulated ice may burden tree branches and power lines, leading to widespread outages.

In Indiana, authorities canceled their Winter Games, concerned about residents' safety during events such as ice trike relay races amid extreme cold. Preparations weren’t limited to that state; various college sports teams opted to reschedule or postpone events while the Texas Rangers canceled their Fan Fest.

Weather forecasts indicate that the harshest windchills could drop below -50 F across the Northern Plains, with subzero conditions extending southeast to the Mid-Atlantic and Southern Plains, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents like Wendy Chambers from Atlanta prepared for potential power outages by purchasing batteries and flashlights. Chambers expressed, “We’re going to be prepared. We want to enjoy some games and activities even if the power goes out.”

Meanwhile, Oklahoma truck driver Charles Daniel aimed to maximize his load before the storm’s arrival. One mistake can literally kill somebody, so you have to be smart about what you do, Daniel noted, emphasizing the importance of being equipped in case of emergencies.

In Arkansas, the Department of Transportation pre-treated roads using brine, which helps in preventing ice buildup, while Alabama faced complications with rain washing away brine preparations. The Alabama Department of Transportation warned against road travel during icy conditions, labeling even a quarter-inch of ice as hazardous.

As forecasts predict severe conditions beginning Saturday afternoon across Maryland, local governance has taken preemptive actions, with states of preparedness declared in North Carolina and South Carolina to facilitate faster coordination during emergencies.
