A gunman was killed and two were injured in a shootout near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul.

Two policemen were slightly injured in the gun fight, Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said.

Ciftci stated that the attackers had arrived in Istanbul from the city of Izmit by rental car, and that two of them were brothers.

In a statement on X, the interior ministry identified the gunman killed as Yunus E.S., who it said had connections to a terrorist organization that exploits religion.

This statement is believed to refer to the Islamic State group, although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Initial reports from police suggested that two assailants were killed; however, local governor Davut Gul later clarified that only one had been killed.

The two injured attackers were identified as Onur Ç and Enes Ç, who were the aforementioned brothers.

According to the ministry's statement, the injured police officers were not in life-threatening condition, with one shot in the leg and the other in the ear.

Intensive digital communication has been detected among the three neutralized terrorists, and the interrogation of the injured terrorists continues, the statement added.

Governor Gul informed reporters that the attackers used rifles and pistols during the assault.

He also confirmed that no Israeli diplomatic personnel were present in the consulate, which is situated in Istanbul's main business district in the Besiktas area.

The gunfight occurred in broad daylight; video circulating on social media shows the moment when one armed attacker was shot by police.

Witnesses reported that sounds of gunfire were loud and persisted for approximately 15-20 minutes.

Unverified videos online depicted numerous police vehicles and a heavy police presence around the area, which was cordoned off for several hours following the attempted attack.

Currently, no Israeli diplomats are stationed in Turkey, and the consulate has been unoccupied for the past two-and-a-half years, amidst deteriorating relations between Ankara and Tel Aviv over issues related to the Gaza conflict.

The justice minister stated that an investigation into the attack has been initiated.
