Airlink, the South African airline behind a spectacular low‑altitude fly‑past over a packed stadium during a recent rugby match, has cancelled its planned repeat display. The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) confirmed the decision after reviewing the flight data and hearing public statements about the stunt.
During the last weekend’s show, two jets flew less than 50 feet above the roof of the DHL Stadium in Soweto, an action that drew mixed reactions. While some praised the precision of the manoeuvres, others called it reckless.
SACAA said the operation had initially met all safety requirements but is now conducting a deeper investigation following media coverage. The regulator announced that it had obtained flight data recordings and other documents for analysis.
Airlink has not commented on the cancellation of the fly‑by, but officials emphasised that the jet formation was executed under approved altitude and speed limits by an experienced crew.
Such aerial displays have become part of South Africa’s sporting and presidential traditions. The regulator reiterated that aviation safety takes top priority and must never be compromised.
