SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Timothy Busfield, best known for his roles in 'West Wing' and 'Field of Dreams,' has been indicted by a grand jury in New Mexico on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child under the age of 13, announced a county prosecutor on Friday.
The allegations arise from Busfield's directorial work on the set of the television series 'The Cleaning Lady' from 2022 to 2024. The actor has vehemently denied the charges, asserting through his attorney that he intends to 'fight these charges at every stage.'
Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman shared the indictment details via social media, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations. In January, Busfield voluntarily surrendered to authorities concerning related allegations and was subsequently released by a judge who did not find a pattern of criminal behavior in his history.
Busfield's attorney, Larry Stein, has previously pointed out that during initial police interviews, the children reportedly stated that there was no inappropriate conduct by Busfield. Stein alluded to possible manipulation by the boys’ parents in prompting accusatory statements following the loss of significant acting roles on the series.
Conversely, Assistant District Attorney Savannah Brandenburg-Koch has argued that there is substantial and specific evidence corroborating claims of abuse, citing medical findings and information from the boys’ therapist. She noted that witnesses expressed fear regarding potential retaliation and professional repercussions.
Each of the counts Busfield faces could potentially result in a six-year prison sentence, with the possibility of enhancements if the charges involve sexual offenses. The indictment allows for the case to proceed towards a possible trial, circumventing a preliminary hearing on the evidence.
As the case progresses, public attention will remain on the accusations against Busfield, whose notable performances have shaped a commendable career in acting, bringing an added layer of public interest to these serious allegations.
