ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — On Monday, authorities identified the four victims of a tragic mass shooting that occurred at Willie's Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island over the weekend. The shooting took place during a crowded event attended by alumni from Battery Creek High School, resulting in four fatalities and at least 20 injured individuals.
The deceased have been identified as Kashawn Glaze, 22, Chiraad Smalls, 33, Amos Gary, 54, and A’shan’tek Milledge, 22. In the aftermath of this horrific event, the community has come together to honor the victims, with flowers and candles placed at the scene as a symbol of mourning.
As investigations continue, local authorities are actively looking for 'persons of interest' in connection with the shooting and have urged the public to provide any information that may assist in their inquiry. In a statement, the sheriff's office commended the community for their support and patience during this challenging time.
The bar, known for its Gullah-inspired cuisine, has been described not only as a dining establishment but also as a pillar of the community dedicated to youth empowerment. Bar owner Willie Turral expressed the emotional weight carried by those connected to the venue. “It’s hard to have your name on the door and not feel the weight of what’s happening,” he remarked.
This incident follows a troubling trend of violence at public gatherings, highlighting an urgent need for discussions around safety in community spaces. As the investigation unfolds, the community stands united in its grief, striving for healing and justice.
The local Gullah community, of which approximately 5,000 members reside on the island, has deep historical roots tracing back to enslaved West Africans who worked the rice plantations in the area. In light of this tragedy, the resilience and solidarity of this community will be crucial in navigating the difficult days ahead.
