SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — In a devastating act of domestic violence, a gunman in Louisiana killed eight children at two homes early Sunday morning, as reported by the Shreveport police. This tragedy marks the most deadly mass shooting in the United States in over two years.

“This is an extensive scene unlike anything most of us have ever seen,” stated Chris Bordelon, police spokesperson.

The ages of the victims ranged from just one year to 14 years old, with some being related to the suspect. In total, 10 individuals were shot during the shootings.

Following the incident, the gunman died after a police chase, during which officers fired at him. The suspect reportedly stole a vehicle while fleeing the scene. Police have not yet released the suspect's identity but confirm he was an adult male.

Police officials continue to gather information from multiple crime scenes, including two homes and a third location. Not only has this incident deeply affected the local community, but it also reignites discussions surrounding gun violence in the U.S. In a statement, Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed his heartbreak, saying, “I cannot begin to imagine how such an event could occur.”

The shockwaves from this tragic event resonate throughout the nation, drawing comparisons to past incidents. According to data compiled by the Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University, this shooting is reportedly the deadliest since eight individuals were killed in a suburb of Chicago in January 2024.

At a press conference, Shreveport's Mayor Tom Arceneaux commented on the gravity of the situation, noting, “This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had. It’s a terrible morning.”

Authorities have asked Louisiana State Police for assistance in investigating the shootings. State police are actively requesting anyone with pictures, videos, or information related to the incident to come forward.

As the community grapples with this horrific loss, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed deep sorrow and gratitude towards the first responders. The need for support and healing within the community remains critical as investigations continue.
